Travelling beyond the UK opens up a world of different cultures, traditions, landscapes and experiences. There are exotic locations and bustling, vibrant cities to explore, while the wonders of the natural world entice the traveller and offer opportunities for adventure, so why not study it?

The travel and tourism sector is the UK’s third largest employer, accounting for 9.5 per cent of total employment. Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK in employment terms, employing nearly 3 million people, and the value of tourism to the UK economy is approximately £121 billion of UK GDP. In 2016, travel and tourism contributed 10.2 per cent of the world GDP, and the sector now supports 292 million people in employment – that’s one in ten jobs worldwide.
In Travel and Tourism students will explore some of the key areas within the sector, including: the contribution of travel and tourism to the UK economy; tourism development; trends in travel and tourism; how organisations meet customer needs; the location and appeal of different types of travel and tourism destinations; and the impact of travel and tourism on the local community, environment and economy. Students will also prepare a holiday plan to meet customer needs, understand the different factors that influence global travel and tourism, and learn how travel and tourism organisations and destinations respond to these factors

Currently we offer Btec First in Travel and Tourism in Year 11 & the new Btec Tech Award in Travel and Tourism in Year 10.

Year 10

Terms 1 & 2There are many organisations involved with different aspects of travel and tourism, including travel agents, tour operators, transport and accommodation providers and visitor attractions. In this component, you will learn about the wide range of different travel and tourism organisations and their aims such as making a profit, providing services, promoting a cause or contributing to the community. This component will give you an understanding of the role of different travel and tourism organisations, and the features and appeal of tourist destinations• Investigate the aims of UK travel and tourism organisations

Terms 2 & 3You will learn about the basic and specific travel and tourism needs of different types of customer and the factors that can influence their needs and preferences. You will also learn how travel and tourism organisations meet these needs and preferences by offering a variety of products and services, including different types of holidays and accommodation.

You will apply your understanding by selecting products and services and planning a holiday to meet the needs of specific customers.

Students will consider how organisations use research to identify and respond to tourism trends, when selecting and planning products, services and holidays to meet customer needs and preferences.

Year 11

Terms 1 & 2 Students will explore the different factors that may influence global travel and tourism, and how travel and tourism organisations and destinations respond to these factors. Students will examine the potential impacts of tourism at global destinations and how destinations can manage the impacts of tourism and control tourism development to achieve sustainable tourism

• Investigate the factors that influence travel and tourism and the ways that travel and tourism organisations, destinations and governments respond to these influences and their reasons.
• Explore the possible impacts of tourism such as leakage, habitat loss and employment creation, and consider ways these can be managed by destinations, organisations and governments.
• Students will investigate how tourism may bring change to destinations over time and how destinations can encourage, manage and develop tourism
